In the gospel of John, we are told Mary Magdalene was the first to discover the empty tomb. She was, understandably, confused and upset, thinking Jesus’ body had been moved. In her distress she encounters a man, a man she mistakes for the gardener. It is the risen Christ, only she does not recognize him. It is only when he speaks her name that she knows who he is. In her shock of recognition, she cries out, “Rabbi!”
I have taken to talking to strangers at the gym. This is not my usual style. Last week I made the aquaintance of three beautiful Hispanic ladies: Gabriella, Yvette, and Marian. I learned their names and two of them didn't even speak English! I was able to communicate just a little in Spanish, and they were delighted I would try.
They were so complimentary to me. We encouraged each other. We were strangers and yet, in the learning of the names, we are no longer so.
I walked away with an extra spring in my step.
