Not Enough Son

Last year I planted two knockout rosebushes in two different corners of my backyard. They are both doing well, but one is double the size of the other. The difference? Amount of sun. It has taken me most of my adult gardening life to appreciate the importance of the sun in growth (yes, I am a slow learner!).

So it goes with our lives. We do not thrive when we are "all about us." When our ego gets bigger and bigger and we put most our time, energy, thought and resources into "us and ours" we find ourselves diminished, oddly enough.

This is where the Son comes in. One of the great ethics of Christianity is its insistence on forgetting self in order to find our true selves. Christ did not give us a choice if we are to follow him. We must forget ourselves and love God and others AS OURSELVES.

So simple, and so hard. To thrive and grow, there must be more Son.
